Calpe = Phoenician = hollow rock (the Phoenicians called Gibraltar 'Calpe' and though our Calpe isn't hollow it looked alike to the Phoenicians moving further up the coast

Ifach = Phoenician = North or northern

Calpe Ifach = Northern hollow rockNamed this to differentiate it from Gibraltar

Many references still exist in Gibraltar to their old name for their rock of 'Calpe'

So our name comes from the Phoenician language and not from Valencian (a language which was not introduced in Calpe until the conquest in the13th century of Valencia and Murcia)
